School/Area Evacuation

Natural Gas Leak/Unknown Odours

If an odour causes dizziness, nausea, burning, stinging or any other symptoms, and/or there is a smell of natural gas (i.e. rotten eggs). 

Procedures:
Daytime (weekdays), and Evenings/Weekends/Holidays:
  1. Alert as many people as possible in the surrounding area 
  2. Open doors and windows (if you can) and evacuate the area
Do not use the following:
  • PA system
  • Cell phones
  • Walkie-talkies
  • Computers
  • Radios
  • Light switches 
  • Flashlights
  • Telephones
  • Elevators
  • Or anything that might spark
Alerting emergency services and Crescent representatives
Note: All calls must be made outside of the affected area
  1. Call 9-1-1 if
    1. Medical treatment is required
    2. The symptoms may be life-threatening
  1. Daytime (weekdays), 
    1. Call the school nurse at 416-999-1828
    2. Call reception (dial 0 from any school landline or 416-449-2556)
      1. Reception
        1. Contact Facilities
        2. Contact the Executive Team
        3. Wait for further instructions
      2. Facilities
        1. Investigate the situation
        2. If natural gas is smelled they will then proceed to shut the main gas line to the school.
        3. Turn off all HVAC Equipment in the area affected.
        4. They will then contact AINSWORTH to notify them of the issue
  2. Evenings/Weekends/Holidays
    1. Call facility duty phone at 416-999-1211
  3. Once outside keep clear of roads, fire routes, hydrants and walkways
  4. Do not return to the school until it is declared safe by the school Fire Marshal (i.e., school officials in charge)
Note: In emergencies, individuals with disabilities may need assistance to evacuate
