Bomb Threat

Always treat a bomb threat as serious.

Procedures:

Daytime (weekdays), and Evenings/Weekends/Holidays:

1. Remain calm and act with urgency 
 
2. Person who receives the call needs to notify
a. Daytime (weekdays):
i. Call reception (dial 0 from any school landline or 416-449-2556)
b. Evenings/Weekends/Holidays:
i. Call facility duty phone at 416-999-1211
ii. Proceed to step # 7:

While on the phone with the caller (if possible), ask the following questions:
a. Where is the bomb?
b. When is the bomb set to detonate?
c. What will cause the bomb to detonate?
d. What kind of bomb is it?
e. What is your name?
f. Where are you?
g. Why did you place the bomb?

Helpful information for the police
a. Date and time of call
b. Phone number of caller, if on call display
c. What exactly did the caller say, if you can remember
d. Which of these caller identifiers apply:
i. Male/Female
ii. Nervous/Calm
iii. Accent
iv. Angry/Stressed
v. Voice characteristics
      • Nasal
      • Lisp
      • Slurred
      • Crying
      • Normal
      • Sincere
      • Broken
      • Muffled/Fake
      • Squeaky/Hoarse
      • Other
      • Did the voice sound familiar? (Y/N)?
      • Who did it sound like?
e. What background noises did you hear?
      • Airplanes
      • Traffic
      • Trains
      • Water
      • PA voices
      • Machinery
      • Music
      • Bar noises
      • Children
      • Television
      • Other
3. Reception will notify someone from the Executive team
 
4. The Executive team member will then announce the following message over the PA: PLEASE PERFORM A VISUAL SCAN OF YOUR AREA BEFORE EVACUATING THE PREMISES. Note: a VISUAL SCAN is a quick scanning of the area to look for anything suspicious and/or unusual Reception/Executive Team member will pull the fire alarm to evacuate the school.
 
5. After hearing the message:
a. School faculty/staff should scan their workstation/class for any unusual/suspicious object.
b. If found,
i. Do not touch the object
ii. Immediately notify the school’s Fire Marshal and/or Heads or Assistant Heads of Schools
iii. If safe to do so, proceed to evacuate the area
iv. If not safe to do so, consider hiding by closing doors, under a table or behind a solid wall, as far as you can from the suspicious/unusual object
c. If not found, continue to step 6

6. If it is safe to leave the area, evacuate to:
a. Primary Location: Innes Field
b. Secondary Location (if primary location is not safe): Field House
c. Tertiary Location (if the school property is not safe):
i. Granite Club (on the west side of Bayview Ave) or
ii. The Bob Rumball Center (Property just north of the school)

7. For faculty/staff and extended Crescent family (including renters and guests)
a. Make sure that all students are evacuated
b. All Fire Wardens should clear their sections
c. Once outside,
i. Go to designated area above
ii. Take attendance of all staff/students/guests
iii. For faculty
1. Report who is missing to Assistant Head (faculty and students)
iv. For staff, extended Crescent family, renters and guests.
1. Check in with their own managers
2. Managers should report any missing staff to the main Fire Marshal
8. For students
  1. Lower School 
    1. Meet with Home Form teacher to confirm attendance 
    2. Remain calm and quiet and wait for further instruction 
  2. Middle School 
    1. Meet with Home Form teacher to confirm attendance 
    2. Remain calm and quiet and wait for further instruction 
  3. Upper School 
    1. Meet with your Mentor Group to confirm attendance 
    2. Remain calm and quiet and wait for further instruction
 
Note: Before confirming the number of missing people, count those who are at the Field House
 
9. Follow all instructions given by Toronto Fire Department/Toronto Police. Do not return to the school until it is declared safe by the Fire Department
