Be The One is a student-led initiative focused on the concept of everyday heroism. The Be The One tool kit promotes positive student leadership in support of a safe and inclusive school culture.
Be the One was conceived in 2018 by Michael Farkouh ’20, then a Grade 11 student. Driven by the knowledge that if a bystander intervenes the vast majority of bullying instances would stop, Be the One encourages Crescent students to be upstanders, rather than bystanders. Be The One’s mandate has grown from its initial focus on anti-bullying to encompass bias reduction and helping students to develop a growth mindset to explore personal potential and to cultivate skills necessary for everyday heroism.
Be the One holds student assemblies, creates collateral material to encourage debate and dialogue, and sponsors Crescent’s Pink Shirt Day.
Be the One was modeled on and works in collaboration with the Heroic Imagination Project (HIP), a nonprofit research and education organization. HIP was started by Dr. Philip Zimbardo, author, psychologist, and professor emeritus at Stanford University.
