Spring Athletics: Havercrest Team Scores an Ultimate Prize

In a demonstration of “teamwork makes the dream work,” Crescent’s Ultimate Senior D1 team, in partnership with Havergal Collegiate, triumphed over Clarkson Secondary School and earned a bronze medal at OFSAA on May 31. It is the team’s highest placement at OFSAA to date and Director of Athletics Fraser Bertram says the team has been improving year after year. “The Crescent side of the team is mainly students who started in Grade 9, played on the junior team and moved to the senior team,” he says. “They’ve had time to build.”

The game format dovetails nicely with Crescent’s core values and commitment to character. There are no referees, and players have to collaborate to make calls on the field. “At the end of the game, you don't just shake hands,” says Bertram. “You come together with the other team and present spirit points. Each team brings an award or a gift for the other team.”

Crescent now has five ultimate frisbee teams, thanks to the addition of an under-14 team this year. “We have a great relationship with Havergal and we’re seeing this cumulation of skill development from our players in a sport that’s growing within high school athletics,” says Bertram. “It's nice to see we're part of that growth and having some success.”

This wasn’t Crescent’s only accomplishment in athletics this spring. Below is a list of highlights. Congratulations to all of our athletes!
