Online Learning

In February 2022, the Ontario Ministry of Education introduced a new graduation requirement for secondary students. Beginning with students who entered Grade 9 in the 2020-21 school year, students must earn at least two online learning credits as part of the requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). 

 

The Ministry provides a provision for parents/guardians to opt out on behalf of a student if they feel online learning is not in the student’s best interest. Additionally, principals of independent schools may opt out of this requirement for the entire school if, in the principal’s opinion, the online learning graduation requirement conflicts with the educational mission of the school. There is no penalty for opting out/withdrawing from the online learning requirement.

 

Crescent believes that our mission is best fulfilled — and that the best learning takes place — in person and on campus. We contend that students will derive more significant benefits from relational learning and peer socialization than what online learning offers. For this reason, Crescent has chosen to exempt all students from the online learning requirement.

 

Crescent provides opportunities to aid in developing online learning skills if a Crescent student and his parents would like to enrol in an online learning course as part of his secondary school program. Online courses are available through eLearning Consortium Canada (ELCC), a cooperative, not-for-profit organization that delivers quality online courses to benefit students in CIS-member independent schools. As a member school, Crescent students are eligible for the many full-year and summer-only online courses through ELCC.
