Wall of Honour—Charles Dalton
From Crescent, Charles Dalton went on to Central High School of Commerce. After two years, he left to work for the Bank of Montreal before joining the family firm, Dalton Brothers.
In 1939 he enlisted in the Armed Forces. As members of the Queen's Own Rifles, Charles and his brother, Elliot, each commanded assault companies on D-Day. Charles' B Company was met by severe machine-gun fire from an enemy strong point immediately to its front. Despite 65 casualties shortly after landing, Charles, who was suffering from a severe head wound, led his men forward across the beach and was instrumental in knocking out a German pillbox. For his example of leadership and bravery, Charles Dalton was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.
After the war, he joined Carling Breweries where he was an executive until his retirement in 1968.
Charles' two sons were also Crescent students—Chris, class of 1959 and Ian, class of 1965. His grandson, Dee Reed, was a member of the class of 1982, and his two nephews are alumni (both from the class of 1962). Mark and Brett are the sons of Charles' brother Elliot. Charles also served on Crescent's Board of Governors from 1957-1985.
